Miss Czech-Slovak WI Pageant Judging Criteria
PERSONAL INTERVIEW
Consider qualities and attributes of a Miss Czech-Slovak Wisconsin State Queen:
Could she represent Wisconsin well at personal appearances and the national pageant?
-Over-all first impression.
-Personal appearance.
-Personality.
-Intelligence.
-Validated opinions.
-Speech, vocabulary and grammar.
-Style.
-Emotional Control.
Judge the contestant on how well she has stated her opinion; it is inconsequential whether her opinion aligns with your own.
KROJ
Please notice that there is no longer any distinction between Authentic Nationality Kroj and Americanized kroj. All is one category as determined by the Miss Czech-Slovak US Pageant Committee.
Kroje will be judged on accuracy to family story, poise while modeling, authenticity, and kroj knowledge. The kroj should be representative of the candidate's cultural heritage. Kroje will not be judged on intricate detailing, whether self-made, bought, how fancy or plain, etc. Answers to Kroj questions during private and public interview will also be considered. Candidate should not be penalized for not making their own kroj, nor for having a purchased kroj. Judges may deduct points for kroje that do not represent the region, town, or village of the candidate's family's ancestry.
ON-STAGE INTERVIEW
Qualities and attributes of a Miss Czech-Slovak Wisconsin State Queen.
-Could she represent Wisconsin well in personal appearances and at the national pageant?
-Over-all first impression.
-Personal appearance.
-Personality.
-Intelligence.
-Validated opinions.
-Speech, vocabulary and grammar.
-Style
-Emotional control
-Stage Presence. How well does she handle being in front of audience?
Criteria for Scoring TALENT
Contestants are encouraged to do something that displays the candidate's heritage in some way. Judges may not penalize contestants for not doing a performance utilizing the Czech Slovak languages / composers, etc.
-Personality.
-Interpretive ability.
-Technical skill level (execution, technique) Again, keep in mind whether this candidate has potential talent, i.e. talent which could be developed with
practice.
-Stage presence (on stage poise) Is she comfortable being on stage?
-Each candidate will be timed and is given 4 minutes to perform.
-Totality of all elements (costume, props, voice, use of body, choreography, etc.
General observations should include execution, technique, synchronization, stage presence, and the totality of all elements – including voice, use of body, costume, music, props and choreography. Having lots of props does not necessarily mean more points. Candidates should not be penalized for sound equipment failure that is out of the candidates' control.
SCORING: Do not judge contestants against each other, rather, judge each as an individual on the merits of their area of competition. Only one candidate should receive a score of 15 in each category by each judge.
Do not discuss your opinions with the other judges. Avoid making comments to others afterwards.
Do not just pick a favorite and score her the highest every time unless she really earns the top score in every area of competition.
Judges should never discuss how they voted after the competition is over. It serves no useful purpose.
Be certain your winner has that “magic quality” … a truly happy personality. Picture her competing on the national level or speaking in front of a
large crowd. Would she truly be the best person to represent Wisconsin?
Note to Judges:
Please confine your personal interview questions to subjects referred to in the Contestant’s Fact Sheets. We do not expect these young women to be experts in the politics or the language of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Rather, we hope their participation in this pageant will inspire them to learn more about the traditions, their family heritage and the culture of the Czechs, Moravians & Slovaks.
Thank you!
